At DogTagsRus we get questioned all the time about the imprinting on the physical dog tags.  Some of the questions we normally hear are:

Why are some dog tags

embossed

(imprinted with raised letters) and why are some dog tags

debossed

(imprinted with stamped in letters)?

Dog Tag machines imprint dog tags with the style of type that is loaded into the machine when it is purchased from the manufacturer.  The major cost of a dog tag machine is the type die set.  Type sets consist of individual character stamps manufactured to be a die and made of hardened tool steel.  Some machines are intended to deboss text while others are intended to emboss text.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to imprinting text onto individual dog tag blanks.  There is no industry standard, rules or regulations as to the requirement of either embossed

What are military dog tags?

A dog tag is the informal name for the identification tags worn by military personnel, because of their resemblance to actual dog tags. The tag is primarily used for the identification of dead and wounded along with providing essential basic medical information for the treatment of the latter such as blood type and history of inoculations. Dog tags are usually fabricated from a corrosion-resistant metal or alloy such as aluminum, monel or stainless-steel, although during war-time they have been made from whatever metals were available. In the event the member has a medical condition that requires special attention, an additional red tag with the pertinent information is issued and worn with the dog tags.

Wearing of the tag is required at all times by soldiers in the field. It may contain two copies of the information and be designed to break easily into two pieces. This allows half the tag to be collected for notification while the other half remains with th

Dog tags were created and continue to be used by the Department of Defense from 1906 to today.

The Identification Tag was first introduced on Dec. 20, 1906, by General Order No. 204.

It is further described as being part of the uniform and that the purpose for wearing dog tags was to enable positive identification of a casualty or remains; to make a difference both for the families and the authorities, should the person end up as being known but to

Personalised debossed WW2 US Military dog tags

Authentic WW2 US Military debossed stainless steel dog tag set.

These tags are exact replicas of the tags issued to US service personnel during WW2.

The WW2 tags differ from modern dog tags in a number of ways....

- Rather than being embossed, these tags are debossed, where the characters are stamped into the face of the tag.

- These tags are read from the smooth side not the side with the rolled edge as with the modern tags

- The notch on the tag allows the tags to be fitted in to the Addressograph model 70 imprinter one way only.

The model 70 imprinter was used  by medics to copy the details from the tags on to paper quickly and accurately.

We use the exact same equipment that was used in World War 2 to personalise the tags.

As a result the character set available is quite limited compared with the current issued tags.
