Developments in East Asia



Main Ideas:





Song Dynasty used traditional Confucian methods to create an imperial bureaucracy to maintain its rule







Chinese culture flourished & shaped neighboring regions' cultures (Korea, Japan, Vietnam, etc.)







Buddhism spread to East Asia & influenced a variety of schools & practices







Song Dynasty's economy flourished & became more commercialized → More trade with South & Southeast Asia

The Silk Road began as the Han Dynasty was seeking allies to help fight against the Xiongnu way before 1200. It then developed into a network of trade alliances. The road was a connection of trade routes and carried technologies, religions, goods, and diseases





At a meeting called a Kuriltai where he was elected khan of the Mongol Empire. He launched the Mongol invasions that conquered most of Eurasia.



Guaranteed citizens right to a fair trial, the right to justice, and the rights of individuals.





Marco Polo was a merchant who travelled from Europe to Asia in 1271-95, staying in China for 17 of those years. Kublai Khan employed Polo as an envoy and sent him to areas of Asia.



These dynasties in China emphasized trade and industry and crossed ties with the Silk Roads. The Song rulers created an imperial navy to control piracy on the Eastern route.



During Pax Mongolica. Mongols revitalized intrregional trade between Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. The Mongols built a system of roads and continued to maintain and guard the trade routes. Mongols rules successfully due to their understanding of centralized power. Links societies by sea. Until 1500 when people started sailing across the Atlantic this was the largest sea based system of communication and exchange that ever existed. Common and luxury goods were traded because a ship could carry much more for cheaper. Wheat, sugar, rice, porcelain, and spices were some goods traded. Since this trade was over seas the weather effected it so different technology was created like the astrolabe and magnetic compass.







The silk roads work best when large empires controlled all the land which it stretched. When the mongols took over the road flourished. Most of the goods traded were luxury goods(like silk,teas,salt,sugar, porcelain,and spices)since it cost so much to transport these items over such a long distance. Besides goods being traded the silk road was important because it influenced culture.Different cultures and religions spread as the goods were spread. A downside of this trade was spread of diseases.







This trade linked North Africa and the Mediterranean world with the interior of West Africa. In North Africa they mainly produced manufactured goods( cloth, glasswork, books). In West Africa they produced agricultura
