I live for this level of weirdness. Two years ago, the launch of 7G cellular service ripped apart the world. Different regions have suffered different effects. For instance, the people of Agano all become animals when they turn 21. A town once an hour away now takes days to reach across warped landscapes and over inland seas. The skies at night are filled with moons and encroaching galaxies.

Most places have taken these changes apace. If you can’t do anything about it, you may as well welcome life as a bear or grow content with your brain becoming a fertile bed for mushrooms. In the midst of this, four girls refuse to give up on finding their friend, who ran away just before the 7G disaster. When they get a lead where she is, they take off on a disused train into an unknown world.

I love when a story like this can be told so earnestly. There’s this strange scene where the girls notify a guinea pig that her human granddaughter is still alive and…the weirdness of it all disarms you so much that you forget to have your guard up. I wasn’t prepared for how bittersweet it was

Train to the End of the World
(
Shuumatsu Torein Doko e Iku?
, literally "Where Does the Doomsday Train Go?") is an original anime directed by Tsutomu Mizushima and animated by EMT Squared.

2 years ago, the launching of the experimental 7G cellular network results in complete disaster. Civilization has broken down all across Japan as the people are being affected by 7G's reality-altering powers.

At the town of Agano, its people have transformed into animals with only the youngest being unaffected: Akira Shinonome, Reimi Kuga, Nadeshiko Hoshi and Shizuru Chikura, the best friend of Yōka Nakatomi, the girl who triggered the 7G incident.

Worried about the fate of Yōka and guilt for falling out with her prior to her leaving, Shizuru takes over a passenger train to reach to Ikebukuro, the epicenter where the 7G activated.

The anime premiered on 1 April 2024 on Crunchyroll. A manga adaptation illustrated by Torimura started serialization in March 2024, accompanying the anime.

If you like chaotic but cute anime featuring bizarre fantasy and a genuine emotional core, you’ll want to check out
Train to the End of the World
. This 2024 anime is nothing if not absurd, but in an enjoyable way. Though there are valid criticisms of this anime – mostly that it could have had more depth – I found myself having fun in almost every episode. Please join me for a brief review of
Train to the End of the World

Two years ago, the world as we know it ended in a split second. Japan implemented a new technology called the
7G Network
. Once the waves were activated, catastrophe ensued as the laws of physics, logic, and everything else crumbled. Many people transformed into animals, plants, or objects. Short distances grew absurdly long. Flowers bloomed larger than the buildings that danced like candles in the wind. The sky changed color. It rained golf balls. You get the idea:
everything went crazy
.

The world lost its infrastructure, leading to Japan’s isolation from the outside world. There was no way of knowing if things like

Director Mizushima Tsutomu isn’t concerned with making the next “hit” – if anything, he’s concerned with making the next “concoction.” A look at his filmography will show that he has directed several projects which involve the heavy collision of various ideas that, on paper, seem like they should get along like cats and dogs. How, for instance, is the idea of cute girls doing cute things in a tank battle setting supposed to work? Why would anybody expect a lowbrow teenage sex comedy that also functions as a prison escape flick to mesh together, and somehow have that work? Crazy, right? But crazy is the ...point, as lo and behold, *Girls und Panzer* exists, as does *Prison School*.

And those are just two examples! Mizushima’s understanding and approach to genre is to take what it is about each that people enjoy, and bend or twist them into new, almost-unrecognizable forms. Mizushima doesn’t care about having something to “prove” as it were, mostly because he gets his jollies out of being weird rather than being artful in the way that other directors are. And in an anime l
